Copy-ready message templates

Dog-walker client updates that feel personal.

A useful update says what happened, how the pet was, what you completed, and whether the owner needs to do anything—then adds one detail that proves you were paying attention.

The five-part update

  1. Status: Say that you arrived, the visit is finished, or you are safely locked up.
  2. Care: Name the walk, meal, medication, water, bathroom, play, or home tasks completed.
  3. Observation: Share appetite, energy, bathroom activity, behavior, or anything unusual.
  4. Next action: Tell the owner whether they need to know, confirm, or do anything.
  5. Personal detail: Add one honest moment from the visit so the message does not feel automated.
Specific beats long.“Milo sniffed every mailbox and was very proud of finding a stick” creates more confidence than a paragraph of generic praise.

When you are running late

Hi [client name] — I’m running about [number] minutes behind because of [brief truthful reason]. I now expect to arrive between [new window]. [Pet name] is still within the agreed care window / This may affect the planned timing. I’ll message you as soon as I arrive.

When something needs attention

Lead with the observable facts, not a diagnosis. If the situation is urgent, follow the client’s emergency plan and contact the appropriate veterinarian or emergency service instead of relying on a text message.

Hi [client name] — I noticed [specific observable fact] at [time]. [Pet name] is currently [current behavior / condition], and I have [safe action already taken according to instructions]. Please call or message me at [number]. I’m following the emergency plan in your care notes and will keep you updated.

Keep private details out of the message

Do not include door codes, alarm codes, key locations, full addresses, payment-card information, or other sensitive home-access details in a routine client update. Keep those in the protected care record where they belong.

Make the update easier to write

Complete the visit checklist first, then write from the finished actions. When the booking already carries the pet, home, service, rate, care notes, and completion state, the message becomes a short summary instead of a memory test.
